City of Marion, IA
Home MenuAutomated Collection
For years, residents have asked for a modernized solid waste collection system and in October 2024, the new program for automated garbage/recycling/yard waste collection in Marion began.
Crews are stopping at more houses each day. Collection is expected to take from 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. It is important to have the City-issued wheeled carts at the curb by 7 a.m. on collection day. Carts set out after 7 a.m. will not be collected.
Important Reminders
- Keep a minimum of 3 feet between carts and other obstacles (mailboxes, vehicles, etc.) – more space is better.
- Lids must fully close. Overfilled carts will not be collected.
- If you have an extra bag, it must be placed on top of your garbage cart, with an extra bag sticker visible from the street. Drivers have been instructed not to get out of the trucks. If you consistently put out an extra bag each week, it may be more economical to add a second garbage cart at your address.
- Any extra cardboard or bags next to a container will be left behind. Continue to cut up boxes and larger pieces of cardboard. Boxes that are shoved into the cart get stuck and then block the other recyclables from being emptied.
- Carts must be placed on a flat surface. If necessary, place in the driveway or in the street next to the curb.
- Violations are recorded electronically using the Angel Trax camera system which is installed on each truck. If your garbage, recycling or yard waste is missed in error, please call (319) 377-6367 to inquire within 24 hours.
Common Violations
If your carts were not collected, it could be because:
- It was overfilled and the lid wasn’t shut.
- It was too close to another cart or other obstacle - a minimum of 3 feet of separation is required.
- It was not facing the correct way – the front of the cart should be facing the street and the wheels facing the sidewalk/home.
- It was too far to reach – the carts should be placed right behind the curb, the truck's mechanical arm can only extend 10 feet.
- Extra garbage on top of the cart does not have a bag tag. A $2.50 extra bag sticker is required.
- Contaminated recycling (glass, Styrofoam, etc.) was identified – if visible from the camera system, the drivers can stop collection.
- Cart was not on a flat surface.
Those in violation will be left and not collected until the following week.
Yard Waste Collection
Curbside yard waste collection resumed on March 31, 2025.
Yard waste must be placed inside a City-issued yard waste cart with a green lid for curbside service.
Here are three ways to take care of your yard waste:
- Opt-in to the curbside program by requesting a yard waste cart for $6 per month/$72 for the year. The cost is added to your City utility bill. To request a cart, call (319) 377-6367.
- Bring your yard waste to the Yard Waste Drop-Off Facility located at 195 35th Street, Marion. It is open six days per week, year-round.
- If you only have a seasonal need, consider scheduling a special brush pick-up. These occur on Tuesdays and can be scheduled by calling Public Works at (319) 377-6367. The cost is $60 for every 15 minutes at the curb.
