Barking Dogs
To report a barking dog, call the Police Department's non-emergency phone number 319-377-1511 to have an officer meet with you to discuss enforcement.
Stray, Injured or Sick Domestic Animals
Animal control is a function of the Marion Police Department which has an agreement with the Cedar Valley Humane Society (CVHS) to provide care services for domestic animals.
Residents who find a stray domestic animal, within the Marion city limits, may drop it off at the CVHS facility located at 7411 Mt. Vernon Road SE, Cedar Rapids. The facility is open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday, and noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Residents who find a stray animal outside of normal business hours can call the Marion Police Department's non-emergency number, 319-377-1511, and provide their call back number. Dispatchers will contact an after-hours representative from CVHS, who will set up a time to meet the resident at the CVHS facility to take custody of the animal.
If the resident has no way to transport an animal, CVHS will send representatives out into the field to pick up stray animals if they are contained.
CVHS has veterinary services available and will accept injured or sick domestic stray animals. Police officers will not transport animals to the CVHS facility, nor will animals be accepted for drop off at the Marion Police Department.
CVHS will charge a fee of $80 to residents arriving to claim their stray animal and $20 per day for boarding beginning on day two.
Vicious Dog or Dog Bite Incidents
Residents wishing to report a vicious dog, or a dog bite incident, should contact the Marion Police Department non-emergency number or 911 in an emergency.
Wounded or Sick Wild Animals
Neither the Marion Police Department nor CVHS will accept wild animals at their facilities. CVHS will have humane traps available to loan residents on a case-by-case basis. Those arrangements should be made directly with CVHS, during normal business hours, by calling 319-362-6288.
Residents who encounter a wounded or sick wild animal can contact the Police Department to have the animal dispatched if the animal is suffering or poses a risk to public safety. Otherwise, residents should contact a local wildlife animal control business for remediation.
However, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources maintains a list of licensed wildlife rehabilitators which may be of assistance.
Dead Animals
The Marion Public Services Department will remove dead animals from the roadway but will not remove them from private property.
