Marion Public Library to Host Month-Long Community Shred Event
Individuals can bring any unwanted, sensitive documents to the locked shred bin in the library’s media section on the main level. Documents can be dropped off anytime during library operating hours. To ensure capacity for all who would like to participate, individuals are limited to one box per day.

Marion Fire Department Partners wtih Safe Kids Linn County to Offer Car Seat Safety Check
Participants should bring the vehicle they want the car seat installed in, the vehicle owner’s manual, the car seat and the car seat owner’s manual. It is also recommended to have the child present.

Mayor and Re-Elected City Council Members to take Ceremonial Oath of Office; Reception to be Held January 4
Those elected to serve on Marion City Council in the November election will take a ceremonial oath of office on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. It will be the first order of business during the regular City Council meeting. A reception with light refreshments will be held from 4:30-5:15 p.m.

Update: Power has been restored at the Lowe Park Arts & Environment Center
On Thursday, Dec. 28, at about 8 a.m., a downed power line was discovered in the ditch along 10th Street near the entrance to Lowe Park.

City Offices to Close in Observance of Upcoming Holidays
Garbage and recycling collection will be delayed by one day both weeks. Collection will happen Tuesday through Saturday.

Quality of Life in Marion Receives High Marks in the National Community Survey
For Marion, 95 percent of residents rated the community as an excellent or good place to live and 91 percent rated the overall quality of life positively. Ninety-three percent of respondents indicated they intend to remain in Marion for the next five years.

Three Marion Firefighters Achieve Fire Officer Credential
Marion Fire Department Lieutenant Jeff Madland, Lieutenant Zach Bruce and Firefighter Zach Brunscheen have successfully completed the process that awards the professional designation of Fire Officer (FO). These individuals become three of only 706 FOs worldwide, and three of 18 in the State of Iowa.

Free Community CPR Class to be offered in Marion on February 17
To learn life-saving CPR skills, free of charge, sign up to attend the Marion Community CPR Class on Feb. 17, 2024, from 9 a.m.-noon at the headquarters for the Marion Fire Department, 100 Irish Drive. Marion Fire Department professionals will be the trainers.

Christmas in the Park Happening this Friday
As part of the event, 7th Avenue between 10th and 12th Streets will be closed beginning at 2 p.m. Drivers using 6th Avenue are asked to use caution and yield to pedestrians due to increased event activity.

Prescribed Prairie Burns Planned in Marion on Select Dates Through December
The Marion Fire Department and Marion Parks and Recreation Department will be conducting prescribed prairie burns of natural areas at Boyson Trailhead, Lowe Park, Faulkes Heritage Woods, Waldo’s Rock Park and roadway medians throughout Marion.

At approximately 11:11 p.m. on Nov. 20, 2023, the Marion Fire Department was called to 1951 Jackson Drive in Marion for a report of a stove fire.

City Offices to Close in Observance of Thanksgiving Holiday
Garbage, recycling and yard waste will not be collected on Thanksgiving Day and pick-up will be delayed by a day for both Thursday and Friday routes.

Tradition returns to Christmas in the Park on December 1
Due to the event activity in the Uptown Marion area, drivers are reminded to use caution and yield to pedestrians and the horse drawn carriages. As part of the event, 7th Avenue between 10th and 12th Streets will be closed beginning at 2 p.m. and will reopen to traffic at 9 p.m. following the event.
