Did you know that just one quart of oil can contaminate up to 250,000 gallons of water and create an oil slick two-acres in size?
Stormwater that enters the storm sewer flows untreated into local creeks and rivers, picking up pollutants such as trash, oil, and even pet waste along the way. It’s important that the public is aware that storm sewer intakes are not a place to dump waste.
On Monday May 11th, 18 students from Marion High School participated in a day of service known as “One Day in May.” They painted stencils that read “NO DUMPING – DRAINS TO RIVER” on 394 storm sewer intakes to alert people that anything going into the storm sewer drains into our waterways.
